FAQs

What is ProofID?

Proof ID is a Proof of Humanity/Personhood universal identifier offered to each individual to prove they are a unique human in order to create fairer web3 application use cases and protect projects against Sybil attacks. Proof ID offers a familiar experience with ID verification while perserving the privacy and security of each individual by not storing any personal information.

What is a Sybil Attack?

A Sybil attack is a type of cyber attack that involves creating and using multiple fake identities or accounts to manipulate or deceive a system or network.

Why do I need a ProofID?

  • For Individuals - allows you to participate in protocols and places that require the use of it to ensure fairness in the community to allow only one claim/vote per person
  • For Projects - allows your organization to require the use of it ProofID to ensure fairness in the community so that activities can be done and claimed by unique individuals

Do I need an account to claim my ProofID?

Yes, you need to sign in with a Polygon wallet address.

Does ProofID support mutiple wallets?

Not yet! We plan to support mutiple wallets in the future.

How does Proof ID work?

  • We use Stripe Identity to verify your uploaded ID
  • Once the ID is verified - your full name, birth date, and address are hashed and the original data is thrown away (Proof ID does not keep it). It allows us to check for uniqueness without requiring ProofID to hold your personal information
  • We create a non-transferable digital representation of the ID (NFT) and transfer it to your Polygon wallet address
  • The ID which now is in your wallet can be used across different Web3 applications to attest you are a unique human

How does Stripe identity verification work?

Proof ID works with Stripe to conduct identity verification online. Stripe builds technology that’s used by millions of companies around the world such as Amazon, Google, and Zoom. Stripe helps with everything from accepting payments to managing subscriptions to verifying identities.

Stripe helps Proof ID confirm your identity by conducting the following checks:

  1. Stripe captures images of the front and back of your government-issued photo ID and reviews it to make sure that the document is authentic. They’ve built an automated identity verification technology that looks for patterns to help determine if an ID document is real or fake. This process is like a bank teller checking your ID document to confirm that it’s real.
  2. Stripe captures photos of your face and reviews them to confirm that the photo ID belongs to you. They’ve built automated identity verification technology that uses distinctive physiological characteristics of your face (known as biometric identifiers) to match the photos of your face with the photo on the ID document. This process is similar to a bank teller confirming that the photo on your ID document is you based on your appearance—but it’s a higher-tech and more accurate way to identify you as a unique person.
  3. Stripe collects your name, date of birth, and government ID number, and validates that it’s real. They’ll check this information against a global set of databases to confirm that it exists.

Stripe will ask for your consent before collecting and using your biometric information. They’ll only use your verification data in accordance with the permissions you grant before starting the verification process, and based on their Privacy Policy.

What information does Proof ID and Stripe store?

Both Proof ID and Stripe have access to the information that you submit through the verification flow. We rely on Stripe to help store your verification data. Stripe uses access controls and security standards that are at least as stringent as those used to handle their own KYC and payments compliance data.

ProofID does NOT store the personal identifiable information (PII) from Stripe. After you are verified via Stripe and the data is immediately wiped clean on our systems. We only store your wallet address and your unique ProofID number.

Where does Proof ID store the above information?

ProofID stores the data securely in a centralized database which is up kept to the latest industry security standards. (Yes, really!)

Why do you ask? Because we value your security for the long term as other current decentralized data storage methods are eventually at risk as encryption can eventually be broken. For your peace of mind, we ensure that our security pratices and data storage stays up to date with industry security best pratices.

What identity documents can I upload?

National Identity Card, Government issued ID (i.e. license) and Passports. For more specific country information, please find it here: https://stripe.com/docs/acceptable-verification-documents

Which countries are currently supported?

We are limited by which countries Stripe currently supports. Please find the actively maintained list here: https://stripe.com/docs/identity/verification-checks?type=document#document-availability

Why do you need my selfie/picture after I provide my document for vertification?

We require the selfie along with the provided document to ensure the person uploading the document is actually you. We want to ensure no one stole your ID document and is trying to create a ProofID for ill inntent with their wallet address.

How much does it cost to get a ProofID?

Free! Yeah, you read that right, a bit strange for a product that uses a blockchain. Random Bits Studio or a partnered project covers the cost of minting the NFT and verification cost as a product for the public good.

What is ProofID’s business model?

ProofID's Proof of Humanity ID product is a non-for-profit and for the public good of the community. Our goal is to be a building block for the community to promote a more fair society.

Can I partner with Proof ID?

Absolutely! We’d love to work with you and help you accomplish your goals. Get in touch with us here.
